Perry to Jackson - Day 2

Day two was kind of an emotional one. We started out taking a look at all the bugs that attacked our car last night and where we landed in Perry, Georgia, my late husband‘s hometown.

We went to the cemetery where his parents were buried, Granny and Paw-paw Georgia. We paid our respects and went on our way to our next destination.

Montgomery, Alabama! This is my late husband’s birthplace.  He stayed true to his roots his whole life, loved the University of Alabama and their mascot, an elephant. We visited the home he used to live in with his family and then did lots of historical visits.

First, Hank Williams Circle where the country singer and his wife Audrey were buried. There were pictures of his albums carved into the headstone! There was even a message from Hank Williams Jr., to all the fans who visit there frequently.

Next, we visited the corner where Rosa Parks refused to move give up her seat to a white person. The stoic statue really is impressive.

Chris’s hotdogs are supposed to be extremely famous. I was an MLK Junior eight there! What we got, however, was a mushy mess. I think it was supposed to be a hotdog with sauerkraut, chili, cheese and mustard.  This was very far from what either of us were expecting.

We drove by the church, where MLK was a preacher, a civil rights memorial and several other important places in town.

Selma, Alabama was our next stop. They drove over the famous Edmund Pettus bridge and found a beautiful mural on the other side.

The rest of the town was terribly dilapidated. The kid commented to me how it was a shame that so much had been fought to get the people of this town equal rights, yet the world was still not letting it really happen.

Then, we were off to Jackson, Mississippi, our final destination of the day. We treated ourselves to dinner at the Iron Horse Grill seafood dip with crawfish, and a true, southern, roasted chicken dinner.  Yum!

We made it to Houston!

I was kidding when I thanked my cousin for bringing the hurricane to meet us on our way in to town. But then he said, “All joking aside, we are having hurricane force winds.”

The weather has been mostly great up to this point in our trip. Every day, we’ve had a very short rainstorm. But it hasn’t been a drizzle. It’s been a downpour for about 5-10 minutes and then the sun has popped right back out.  That changed last night when we came to Houston.

Just before Beaumont, Texas, I started driving. Almost as soon as I got back on the road, the sky got really black and for the next hour and a half, it rained and it rained and it rained.

At one point, I was driving on a two-lane road through a park, but it was all anyone could do to drive in the middle of the road.  Both sides were  under water.  All the cars were driving single file to stay out of the flood. But hey, it was a chance to use the four-wheel-drive and sport mode for the first time! I love my new car.

We made it to my aunt’s house safe and sound, noting that now, there were downed tree limbs and garbage cans tossed about the neighborhood. Here’s the local news telling it like it was.

My aunt and cousin made a wonderful dinner for us. I haven’t been here in 20+ years and already, I’m having flashbacks from when I was a teenager, visiting in the summer. Great memories and we hope to make more in the next few days.

Starting our Graduation Road trip!

My baby boy graduated from high school last week and we are going to drive cross country to celebrate.

We leave early tomorrow morning, which is why I am up at 12:15 am writing this blog.  Yes, I should be asleep.  Yes, I shouldn’t have had 57 caffeinated drinks at dinner. Yes, I’m going to be exhausted in the morning!

The trip has been in the works for most of the year but some major plans changed tonight.  We wouldn’t have it any other way.

My dad asked me for my itinerary earlier today and I promised to get one to him, but nothing is set in stone.  That’s the way we planned it, actually.  It’s going to change as we travel and we are leaning into that.

Loose plans as of now:

Day 1 - drive from Pittsburgh to Georgia, hopefully see some family members

Day 2 - drive from Georgia to Mississippi with stops in Montgomery, Selma and Philadelphia, MS - our civil rights history tour day.

Day 3 - drive from Mississippi to New Orleans (Bourbon Street and Beignets!) to Houston where we plan to stay with family a few days

Day 4 - family time in Houston

Day 5  - visit NASA in Houston

Day 6 - go to the beach in Galveston

Day 7 -  the kid’s 18th birthday!   Drive from Houston to Waco to Albuquerque NM

Day 8 - drive from Abq to Phoenix to see more family

Day 9 - family time in Az

Day 10 - drive to Grand Canyon, Four Corners, head into Utah towards home

Day 11 - Colorado, Kansas?

Day 12 - Missouri?

Day 13 - Ohio and home again…

We’ll see how this goes.  Can’t wait!!!
