We made it to Houston!

I was kidding when I thanked my cousin for bringing the hurricane to meet us on our way in to town. But then he said, “All joking aside, we are having hurricane force winds.”

The weather has been mostly great up to this point in our trip. Every day, we’ve had a very short rainstorm. But it hasn’t been a drizzle. It’s been a downpour for about 5-10 minutes and then the sun has popped right back out.  That changed last night when we came to Houston.

Just before Beaumont, Texas, I started driving. Almost as soon as I got back on the road, the sky got really black and for the next hour and a half, it rained and it rained and it rained.

At one point, I was driving on a two-lane road through a park, but it was all anyone could do to drive in the middle of the road.  Both sides were  under water.  All the cars were driving single file to stay out of the flood. But hey, it was a chance to use the four-wheel-drive and sport mode for the first time! I love my new car.

We made it to my aunt’s house safe and sound, noting that now, there were downed tree limbs and garbage cans tossed about the neighborhood. Here’s the local news telling it like it was.

My aunt and cousin made a wonderful dinner for us. I haven’t been here in 20+ years and already, I’m having flashbacks from when I was a teenager, visiting in the summer. Great memories and we hope to make more in the next few days.
